's debate. more importantly, this is a stage where president obama and governor mitt romney will hopefully define their positions on the key domestic issues facing our nation. that's what's on the agenda for this debate tonight; jobs, the economy, health care. but first, a new distraction for the obama campaign during a critical week. it comes in the form of a video released by "the daily caller" of then-presidential candidate barack obama back in 2007. in it he speaks to a group mostly made up of black pastors. his speech got some coverage at the time he delivered it, but his prepared remarks did not include some of the off-the-cuff, off-prompter moments, if you will, alluding to alleged racism to hurricane katrina and spending decisions made by our elected leaders. our chief congressional correspondent mike emanuel is live in washington with more. mike? >> reporter: hi, megyn. the tone has attracted some attention with then-candidate obama sounding different as he spoke to a large group of african-american religious leaders in virginia. one major topic was mr. obama trying to contrast th

less than two years ago as part of the surge authored by president obama had come out. the president never ceases to point out on the campaign trail and elsewhere, that he has ended the war in iraq, has ended the war in afghanistan, two years hence u.s. combat troops are expected to be pulled out of a afghanistan in 2014. so obviously this presents some problems as well as the grim facts on the ground. with these horrific green-on-blue attacks. >> how much does the president anticipate the war in afghanistan will play into the debates on wednesday? >> it's a mixed bag at this point. the president as i pointed out, frequently pointing out that he has a plan to bring american troop combat troops out of afghanistan by the end of 2014. he's talked about his success in bringing american combat troops out of iraq. he's talking about some of the successes up until recently. in endorsing the arab spring in libya and tunisia to a certain extent in egypt. but certainly the situation in libya right now, nothing more needs to be said about that. it's become a political as well as a security foot

be getting tougher for gop challenger mitt romney. first to iowa. president obama is 49% to mitt romney's 5%. >>> and from the columbia dispatch--this has surrogates from both parties sangled today over who's better equipped to guide the economy over the next four years. >> the president hay has created 4 million new manufacturing jobs. he says he's going to reduce the debt. doesn't say how' goegsing to do it. let's be fair here, governor romney has laid out a vision and a direction for this country. let's hold the president to the same standard as well. >> first of all, we have a deficit plan, it's got health care savings. romney doesn't have a deficit plan. he's got a plan to cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires. he's got a 5 trilli$5 trillion. -- another $2 trillion in defense spending. >> just three days into the first presidential debate, meanwhile mitt romney is off to the trail. we have two reports, we begin with nbc's peter alexander, he's with the romney campaign in boston, with a good morning to you, peter. what are you hearing about all the debate preps today. he o'clock n

? shove them into the emergency room. why didn't obama say that? you talk about social security and medicare people, they're part of your 47%. you want to drop them from the list of eligible americans. you don't have any care for these people. what are you talking about? we've got it on tape, governor. we've got it on tape what you think of these people. don't come out here and pretend you care about old people because you met somebody at some campaign event. you've written off 47% of the country before you even started. where was obama tonight? romney, i loved the split screen. staring at obama. addressing him. like the prey. he did it just right. i'm coming at an incumbent. i've got to beat the champ and i've got to beat him tonight and i don't care what this guy moderator whatever he thinks he is because i'm going to ignore him. what was romney doing? he was winning. >> he was winning. >> all right. good morning. it's thursday, october 4th. welcome to "morning joe." wow! page turns a bit. with us on set, we have msnbc contributor mike barnicle and national affairs for "new yo

's look at these numbers. president obama still comfortably ahead. in fact, he's picked up a point. he's at 51%. mitt romney is at 43%. both campaigns think this one is getting more difficult by the moment for mitt romney to win. however -- and this is where it gets fascinating -- in virginia, the president's lead has shrunk to just two points, within the margin of error. last month president obama led by five points there. in florida, mitt romney has closed the gap as well. he's now statistically tied in the state of florida. it is a one-point lead. 47%-46%. al hunt, it is fascinating. ohio seems to be on its own as far as the swing states go. but we could show other swing state polls in colorado, in nevada, in north carolina. these states are really getting tight, to such a degree that a great performance by romney tonight could change the dynamic. >> conceivably, but i don't think it's quite that close yet. i think you certainly see it, as you point out, in florida and virginia. you don't see it in ohio. wisconsin it looks like it's actually widening. iowa, it's four to six. and the

" article talking about the debates in which you quote "republican strategists fretting over obama's recent rise, said the debates could be the last best chance for romney to deliver a decisive blow, change the narrative and steady his campaign." that's quite a tall order, david. sounds like a level of desperation there and desperation then leads to mistakes as we've seen in the past. is that a worry at all for the romney camp? i've heard some analysts say that he needs a hail mary. i mean, is it that dramatic? >> absolutely. the romney camp won't come out and say that. everybody sort of tries to downplay expectations before these things. all eyes are on romney. he's trailing in the polls nationally and in the swing states. he said to his supporters, hey, you know, when i name a running mate and when i'm at my convention you're going to see the bumps. you haven't seen sustained bumps. this is his chance to do it. he's running out of chances. 60 member people could watch these debates. this is a big chance for him. >> the challenger gets a butch just for sharing a stage with the president in

, they say, that what barack obama and joe biden h have done, they have endangered medicare. they have stole moneyy. you have seen the ads. nothing could be further from the truth. every one of you in this room that's on medicare or knows someone, a mom or dad, who is on medicare, knows that since barack obama acted, your parents have and your parents on medicare have more. [cheers and applause] any of you on medicare know, that not only did you hit that doughnut hole where you have to pay all the prescriptions, you are saving $800 a year more than you would had barack not acted. number two, you can go in for that unscheduled visit you didn't think you would need. you don't need to pay a co-pay. you don't need a co-pay for things like colonoscopies and mammograms. [cheers and applause] it is just a bold-faced misrepresentation. i don't know how they can say that with so many medicare recipients saying they are better off. the thing most people don't know is that the action the president has taken has strengthened the medicare trust fund and extended its life up to 2024. that was never there
